The Pakistan People’s Party is in the lead with 98 of the total 246 seats following the by-elections for Karachi’s union committees, according to unofficial results.

If this turns out to be the final then the Sindh-ruling party would be having its city mayor.

According to unofficial results, PPP chairpersons won 98 UCs. The Jamaat-e-Islami won 86 UCs and the PTI came third with 41 UCs.

The City Council is made up of 246 UCs. The results for nine seats are withheld due to ongoing court cases.

Seven UCs were won by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) won three UCs. The newest entrant, Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) won one UC and an independent candidate was elected as a UC chairperson for the last seat.

The election for Karachi’s mayorship cannot be held until the court gives a verdict on the nine stalled UCs.

The election for 235 UC chairpersons took place on January 15 but it was postponed in 11 UCs after some of the candidates passed away after submitting their nomination papers.

On May 7, almost four months after the January elections, elections polling began for by-elections in 11 Union Councils of Karachi where candidates from major political parties contested the by-poll on 26 local government seats.

The PPP grabbed seven out of 11 seats in by-elections in Karachi’s 11 Union Committees, according to unofficial results.
The Jamaat-e-Islami won four seats.

The local body election was originally supposed to take place in July 2022 but it was rescheduled multiple times due to floods and worries over outbreaks of violence.
