Karachi Central Jail officials have revealed a new method used by prisoners to smuggle drugs inside the jail.

The drugs were found inside the food packets brought to inmates by visitors and family members, an official told Aaj TV.

“Small drug pills are hidden in packets of food brought from the prisoners’ homes,” jailer and compound in charge, Ahsan Mehar, said. He added that in recent days, drugs have been smuggled into the jail multiple times.

“A few days ago,we found weed and heroine pills inside a packet of curry that an inmate’s mother brought for him,” Jailer Ahsan Mehar, said. The inmate’s mother dropped off the food and left. After which security found drug pills inside the food packet.

Jailer Ahsan Mehar said that the prisoner is no longer allowed to have visitors or any outside food brought to him.

“We have changed his barracks and increased security. The prisoner has been put under constant surveillance,” he said.

Mehar said that authorities will be activating an intelligence network to control drug smuggling into the prison.

Karachi Central Jail has a total of 64 barracks and around 6,500 inmates.
