Police sources said that Dr Quratulain’s ex-fiancé, Zubair, blamed Dr Birbal for ending his engagement with her. Zubair is being interrogated in light of Dr Quratulain’s statement.

Police said that there’s a possibility that Dr Birbal was being surveilled before his murder.

On Sunday, April 2, Dr Birbal’s assistant, Dr Quratulain, was arrested on suspicion of murder. Police sources said that Dr Quratulain was transferred to Garden police station where she was held overnight.

Earlier, Dr Birbal Genani’s brother had raised suspicion about the injured female assistant, Dr Quratulain, for being involved in the killing of the eye specialist.

He added that even though the female assistant was injured in the attack as well, the possibility of her involvement directly or indirectly in this murder cannot be ignored.

After arresting Dr Quratulain, police said they are on the hunt for her former fiancé to investigate his involvement in the murder. Zubair has been on the run.

A forensic examination of the bullet shells recovered from the scene revealed that the weapon used in the murder hasn’t been used before, police said.

Dr. Birbal was a former health director of KMC. He was murdered on Thursday when unidentified gunmen attacked his car on the Lyari Expressway in Karachi. The assailants shot Dr. Birbal in the head and his assistant, Dr. Quratulain in the stomach.
