US terms Khalilzad’s statement about Pakistan as personal opinion

The Department of State has termed former US ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad’s statement about the politics in Pakistan as personal opinion.

Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel made these comments while speaking at a weekly press briefing.

“Mr. Khalilzad is a private citizen, and any social media activity or comments or tweets that you might reference, those are done in his private capacity, does not represent U.S. foreign policy, and he does not speak for this administration,” Patel told reporters.

The former US Ambassador to Afghanistan, in a tweet, had warned the Pakistan parliament against passing an anti-PTI resolution as he fears that would trigger political polarization and violence in the country.

“There are indications that Pakistan’s parliament, which is controlled by the governing coalition, might well ask the Supreme Court to disqualify Imran Khan from running for election and even prohibit PTI in the next few days,” he wrote on Twitter.

He feared that this will trigger political polarisation and violence in Pakistan.
