Did Karachi really receive heavy rain? Statistics say otherwise

The people of Karachi woke up to pleasant weather Thursday morning as rain lashed parts of the city.

Rain showers soaked several areas including Gurumandir, Lasbela, MA Jinnah road, FB Area, and Tariq Road.

The weather in the port city turned pleasant after an early morning rain. But many people thought it was heavy rain and they should not step out especially since it was a public holiday.

However, data released by Met Office tells a different story. The highest rainfall was recorded in Surjani town at 18.5 mm followed by Masroor Air Base (12 mm), Kemari (5.5 mm), Jinnah Terminal (3.8 mm), Orangi (2.4 mm) and Gulshan Hadid (1 mm).

Airport and University Road recorded the lowest rainfall at 0.2 mm.

This by no means is heavy rainfall.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) issued a forecast earlier this week saying more rains, winds, and thunderstorms were expected during the week in part of Pakistan.

In an advisory, the PMD said that a strong westerly wave is expected to enter Pakistan from March 21 and is likely to grip most parts of the country on March 22.

Under the influence of this weather system, scattered rain-wind-dust /thunderstorm with isolated hailstorm is expected in Sukkur, Jacobabad, Larkana, Hyderabad, Sanghar, Mithi, Thatta, Badin, Shaheed Benazirabad, Mirpurkhas, Dadu and Karachi from March 21 to 24.
