“There are indications that Pakistan’s parliament, which is controlled by the governing coalition, might well ask the Supreme Court to disqualify Imran Khan from running for election and even prohibit PTI in the next few days,” he wrote on Twitter.

He feared that this will trigger political polarisation and violence in Pakistan.

“The IMF support remains doubtful. If the steps mentioned take place, international support for Pakistan will decline further. Political polarization and violence will likely increase,” he added.

Khalilzad hoped that the Apex court won’t become part of the game.

“I hope the Pakistani political leaders rise above destructive petty politics that undermine the national interest. If not, I hope the Supreme Court says no to being used in games that undermine the nation’s interests. I am becoming increasingly concerned about Pakistan,” he concluded.

Senior PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry reacting to the UN envoy’s statement said that Khalilzad, Senator Jacky Rosen, Congress’ Mike Lowen, and the US State Department’s report on human rights are expressing serious concern over the arrests and violence in Pakistan.

He further said that Pakistan is diplomatically isolated, and friendly countries like Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries are keeping them at a distance.

“I would like to ask the government not to take any step in the dummy parliament session today so that the political crisis in Pakistan cannot be handled, even a day’s delay in the provincial elections will be beyond the constitution,” he tweed.
