US, Pakistan open Counter Terrorism Dialogue today

Pakistan and the United States will kick off Counter Terrorism Dialogue on Monday (today) as they look to reset their relationship, particularly in security matters after the country saw a surge in terrorist attacks.

Additional Secretary (UN&ED) Syed Haider Shah will lead the Pakistan delegation and the US delegation will be headed by Acting Coordinator for Counterterrorism Christopher Landberg, Foreign Office said in a press release.

The two-day Counter Terrorism Dialogue will take place in Islamabad from March 06.

The dialogue is aimed at discussing the common threat of terrorism, cooperation at multilateral fora, and countering the financing of terrorism.

The two-day dialogue will provide an opportunity for both sides to exchange views and share their experiences and best practices in the domain of counter-terrorism, FO added.

The United Nations recently revealed in a report that the Taliban have failed to fight terrorists in Afghanistan.

The dialogues are taking place at a time when the country is facing a fresh wave of terror attacks. Their numbers have also gone up since the Afghan Taliban returned to power in August 2021.

Moreover, the State Department spokesperson in one of his recent briefings had said the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) threat to Pakistan could be a threat to the US too. This indicates that Washington is keen to maintain counterterrorism and security-related cooperation.
