Waziristan has gas reserves of over 1 trillion cubic feet: report

The distribution of natural gas from the west block of North Waziristan’s gas fields has begun, in what could be a major sorce of relief for energy-strapped Pakistan.

Waziristan is said to contain over 1 trillion cubic feet of gas, which would amount to 15% of Pakistan’s total gas reserves.

The exploration for gas began in the area in 2016. However, it was the drilling in Sheva by the Mari Petroleum Company in 2021 that yielded results. In 2022, the first well containing 25 million cubic feet was discovered. Since then, another two wells have been found which could take provide 200 million cubic feet of gas.

Apart from providing employment to locals, the value of this gas if fully tapped could save Pakistan $1.5 billion in foreign exchange every year which is currently devoted to imports.

Pakistan is faced with fast depleting gas reserves as the energy requirements of its increasing population rise by the day. With an economy on the brink of default, locally sourced fuels might be the answer to Pakistan’s woes.
