Election Commission expresses ‘disappointment’ at the president’s language

The Election Commission of Pakistan has replied to the president’s letter regarding on Saturday, expressing disappointment at the aggressive language used by Arif Alvi.

However, the commission has decided to participate in the meeting called by the president on February 20.

President Arif Alvi had written a letter to the ECP on Friday, expressing his disappointment with what he called the the commission’s ‘inaction’ and its ‘poignant’ approach towards organising elections.

The president also said that the ECP had shown ‘apathy’ by not responding to his earlier letter on the same topic.

The commission’s response has expressed disappointment over the language used by the president. The ECP has also said that it is an independent body which fulfills its role as per the constitution.

The delay in elections to the recently dissolved KP and Punjab assemblies has been a hotly debated subject. The Lahore High Court has already issued an order asking the ECP to fix a date. However, the commission has challenged the ruling to ask for a more detailed interpretation.
