A tempestuous year for the Senate

ISLAMABAD: The Senate session in the 2022 were marred by protests, riots and walkouts with the agenda tossed around. Much of it had to do with the shift in power as the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s ouster saw the Leader of the House became the opposition leader while Ishaq Dar was sworn in on his vacant seat after four years.

The Senate held 58 meetings over six sessions which saw the passage of 45 bills and 14 resolutions.

The mayhem was triggered by Imran Khan’s ouster as prime minister on April 10.

On April 20, PTI Senator Shehzad Waseem stepped down as leader of the House to become the leader of the opposition.

On May 23, Shahzad Waseem took over as the Leader of the Opposition and Senator Azam Nazir Tarar took over as the Leader of the House.

Another tempestuous session saw PML-N’s Ishaq Dar taking oath on September 27, a day after returning to Pakistan following five years of self-imposed exile. A couple of days later, PM Shehbaz Sharif appointed Dar leader of the House.

PPP leader Mustafa Nawaz resigned from the Senate and was replaced by Senator Waqar Mehdi.

The death of Senator Sikandar Mandharu vacated another seat on which Khaleda Sikandar was elected.
