As per the first information report (FIR), the complaint said that when she returned home from work on Friday, she found that her ten-year-old wasn’t eating properly and spending a disproportionate amount of time in the bathroom. The boy complained of pain in his stomach and anal region.

The single mother, who works as a nurse, conducted a quick inspection and found that his anal region was swollen and bruised.

When she asked the boy about it, the boy told her that on Wednesday a neighbour took him to his house and raped him. The FIR says that the child told the mother the accused had done the same act before as well.

The child identified the neighbour as Muhammad Safi, who is also known as Qari. A qari is a title given to a person who teaches the Quran.

The mother, speaking to Aaj Digital, said that Safi was involved in property-related work but he was known in the area as qari sahab. “He taught the quran in the past but he doesn’t anymore.”

In the complaint, she said that the case was one of sexual abuse or attempted sexual abuse while calling for action against the suspect.

The police have registered the FIR under sections 337 (unnatural offences; intercourse against the order of nature) and 511 (attempt to commit offence).

Police said the child had been shifted to the National Institute of Child Health (NICH) where he would undergo tests to establish the nature of the offence.
