Killing of Arshad Sharif: Govt changes special investigation team

A two-member investigation team instead of three-member would probe the killing of journalist Arshad Sharif, said the new notification issued by the interior ministry.

The new committee would comprise Federal Investigation Agency Director Athar Waheed and Intelligence Bureau Director General Omar Shahid Hameed. Earlier, Inter-Services Intelligence Lieutenant Colonel Saad Ahmed was also part of the team.

Kenyan journalist Eliud Kibii has reported that fresh details have emerged regarding the car that was initially reported stolen, prompting the shooting of journalist AshrafSharif.

“The alleged stolen vehicle is a Mercedes Benz Sprinter van KDJ 700F while the one Arshad was travelling in is a Toyota Landcruiser V8 KDJ 200M,” he said in a series of tweets.

Kibii, who works for The Star Kenya, said that the son of a man identified as Douglas Wainaina, who had told detectives at Pangani Police Station that his vehicle was missing, had argued with the father prompting him to drive off from a parking lot in Ngara, Nairobi.

“On Tuesday, the son was presented in court for driving without a license, but his father who was the complainant through, lawyer Elisha Ndemo, withdrew the case,” he said.

The newspaper reported that in what police termed a “case of mistaken” identity, the GSU officers fired nine bullets at the vehicle in which the journalist was travelling in alongside his driver.

“It has also emerged that his driver at the time of the incident, Khurram Ahmed, is a brother to the owner of a shooting range in the area, Waqar Ahmed. Sharif had been at the Ammodump Kwenia Shooting Range for the better part of Sunday, October 23.”
