Imran Khan’s tone-deaf remark on the benefit of floods

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairperson Imran Khan is no stranger to controversy, and the former prime minister has seemingly started another debate on socia media after his comments at a public gathering in Rahim Yar Khan’s Rojhan district on Saturday.

In comments that have been derided as being tone deaf, Imran Khan predicted a “bumper crop” next season on lands that now stand flooded.

“Right now, everything is submerged in water. But when this water recedes, the biggest advantage would be that farmers will have a bumper crop when they cultivate their wheat in this fertile land.”

The statement comes when crops on thousands of acres have been washed away across Pakistan, and people in rural areas have lost their livelihoods and belongings.

Social media quickly picked on the statement, with many captioning the post with Imran’s exact comment to highlight the ‘insensitivity’.

enter image description here

Others picked up on the laugh that punctuates Imran’s speech when talking about the so-called benefit.

“The Pharaoh mocking flood affectees with a sinister smile,” wrote user with the handle Sam Sam (Fatima).
