Rain reported in parts of Karachi, ‘thunderstorm’ chances in next coming hours

Light to moderate rains were reported in parts of Karachi on Wednesday. The Met Office has forecasted vigorous monsoon activity in the country during the monsoon spell, which would last till August 18.

The rain intensity this time could be less than in July, however, still, 50 to 100mm rain in Karachi could “create problems” apparently due to the city’s infrastructure, Owais Hyder, weather expert, told Aaj News on Tuesday.

Last month stood as the record wettest July since 1961 when the country received more than 181% above average downpour.

The PMD in its August 13 advisory warned that heavy rains may generate urban flooding in Karachi, Thatta, Badin, Hyderabad, Dadu, Jamshoro, Sukkur, Larkana, Shaheed Benazirabad, Mirpurkhas, Rawalpindi/Islamabad, Peshawar, Nowshera, Mardan, Faisalabad, Lahore, and Gujranwala.

The PakWeather.com, a weather update site run by Hyder, said that an intense thunderstorm has formed at South East of Karachi, while more developments were taking place on North Eastern side.
