Jemima Goldsmith: What’s Love Got to Do With It?

‘What’s Love Got to Do With It?’ is a British romantic, comedy film written and produced by Jemima Goldsmith and directed by Shekhar Kapur. This is his first directorial project after his Oscar-winning film Elizabeth: The Golden Age in 2007.

The film is described as a cross-cultural rom-com set between London and South Asia, according to a Deadline article. The film follows Zoe (James), a filmmaker, and contrasts her love path (swiping on dating apps and terrible encounters) with that of her close friend Kazim (Latif), who intends to follow through with an arranged marriage.

She documents his journey from London to Lahore as he prepares to marry a stranger, and she begins to doubt her own romantic notions.

“It’s a story of identities,” reported Variety quoting Shekhar Kapur.

“It’s about cultural clashes and it’s a comedy, but it’s about hiding behind identity and how identities can become tribal, and how tribalism can lead to clashes and fundamentalism. It’s a romcom, but based on this fundamental idea of people adopting identities out of fear of marginalisation.”

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has recorded two songs for the film and will also appear in it, and his music will be featured on the soundtrack. This film also stars a diverse cast, including Pakistani actor Sajal Aly, Lily James, Emma Thompson, and Shazad Latif, among others.

The shooting for the film started last year and we can’t wait for it hit the screens on January 27, 2023.
