Following the ouster of Khan through a no-confidence vote in the National Assembly, six key aides of Khan were barred from going abroad. They were Akbar, ex-assistant to PM on political communications Shehbaz Gill, focal person of ex-PM to digital media Arsalan Khalid, principal secretary of former PM Azam Khan, DG anti-corruption Punjab Gohar Nafees and DG FIA Punjab zone II Mohammad Rizwan.

The IHC directed the FIA to immediately remove the names of PTI politicians from the no-fly list. IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah said the court had declared the black list illegal and issued a judgment that no name could be placed on this list.

In January Akbar resigned from his post and hoped that the process of accountability continued under the leadership of former premier as per the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s manifesto.

After Khan assumed office in 2018, Akbar was appointed as his key aide on accountability.

Akbar, who is a lawyer and legal adviser by profession, is a former deputy prosecutor for the National Accountability Bureau. He is also the founder, legal director and a trustee of the Foundation for Fundamental Rights.
