Senate chairman rejects Ishaq Dar's request to take virtual oath

Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani on Tuesday rejected former finance minister and Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) leader Ishaq Dar’s request to take virtual oath as member of the Upper House of the Parliament.

Sanjrani, declaring the request ‘unconstitutional’, said in a letter to Dar that the oath should be taken following the rules of the Constitution and the Senate, not ‘virtually or in high commission’.

Sanjrani said that he had asked for a virtual (via video link) oath to be taken for the seat or for the administrator to be sworn in at the Pakistan High Commission in London.

However, the Senate refused to accept Dar’s request and asked him to be present in the Parliament House to take the oath.

Earlier this month Dar has written a letter to Senate Chairman seeking his swearing in as a Senator.

In his letter to Sanjrani, Dar requested that arrangements might be made to enable him to take the oath, virtually.

"High Commissioner of Pakistan in London, United Kingdom, or any other person in the High Commission of Pakistan, London may be nominated to administer my oath in London."

He further said that the legal dispute of challenging his election as Senator on a Technocrat seat of the Senate in the elections held on March 3, 2018 has been resolved, adding that the Supreme Court had rejected the civil appeal on December 21, 2021.
