According to media reports, the Indian external affairs ministry had summoned Singapore’s ambassador to the foreign ministry and sought an explanation. Indian Congress leaders and many others lamented the Indian government’s reaction and deplored the prevailing situation. However, there were also people who tried to defend India's democracy and called out Singapore for making such remarks with a reference to former Indian premier Jawaharlal Nehru.

“Nehru’s India has become one where ... almost half the MPs in the Lok Sabha have criminal charges pending against them, including charges of rape and murder,” Lee said in Singapore’s parliament on Wednesday.

But, some social media users used their humour to explain India’s reaction.

One user said the BJP's IT cell was in action after the speech.

There was also a suggestion to ban noodles.

Another user said it was a "difficult situation" for Bakhts -- the BJP workers.

One thought, the development may lead to the boycott of "Singha Beer".
