Meet Muskan: The Muslim student who “bravely” faced-off RSS goons in India’s Karnataka

An Indian hijab-clad Muslim student has taken the internet by storm after a video of her courageously standing ground to a large group of saffron scarves wearing men went viral on social media on Tuesday.

The video shows Muskan Khan coming to her college on a scooter in Karnataka, where she is heckled by a group of men wearing saffron scarves to protest against women wearing hijab in classrooms.

What happens next left many awe-struck.

The men chant slogan “Jai Shri Ram” at her, to which the hijab-clad student responds by raising one arm in the air and shouting back “Allahu Akbar” with full force.

Muskan has become a “symbol of absolute courage and bravery” on social media.

Social media users are calling Muskan a “lioness” for her actions.

Muskan is a second year commerce student, and belongs to the city of Mandya in Karnataka.

Speaking to an Indian news outlet NDTV, Muskan said she went to her college to submit an assignment when she saw that a group of young men was protesting outside the college, and they demanded her to take off her burqa before entering the premises.

India’s southern state of Karnataka has been facing a hijab controversy since last month. It began when six Muslim girls were stopped at the gate of Kundapur Pre-University College in Udupi district and were denied entrance into classes for wearing hijab. The issue has spread throughout the state with protests taking place in many different schools and colleges.

In response to Muslim women protesting for their right to wear hijab in class, groups of Hindu students have been protesting against it while wearing saffron scarves around their necks.

Muskan encountered one of these groups outside her college.

The student appeared on several news channels after the incident and said not only did the men shout “Jai Shri Ram” slogans at her but they also made inappropriate gestures.

It can be seen in the video that the college staff and teachers escort Muskan towards the building.

“I was a little bit scared and then I saw the principal and everyone at the back of me. I was okay,” she said. Muskan later added that about 10 percent of the men were from her college with the rest were outsiders.

Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind has issued a statement announcing a cash reward of Rs500,000 for “the courage of this brave daughter.”

Following this incident, a trend #JinnahWasRight has been rolling on Twitter.

Pakistanis condemned the treatment of Muslims in India under Modi.

While most Pakistanis are celebrating Muskan and her bravery, one user brought people’s attention to one small detail – the way school administration supported Muskan.

“Would you protect a non Muslim/a girl with different views, in front of a charged crowd like this?” she asked.
