Ex-CJP Gulzar Ahmed's request to continue having fool-proof security granted

The Ministry of Interior on Friday approved former CJP Gulzar Ahmed's request of having the same level of security that he had while being the CJP even after his retirement as his judgements on a number of high profile cases might make him a target, reported Aaj News.

Justice (retd) Ahmed would have the same security which the former CJP had while he was serving as the top judicial officer of the country.

Before his retirement on January 27, the Supreme Court registrar on behalf of Justice (retd) Ahmed wrote a letter to the Interior Ministry, stating the ex-CJP has heard a number of high profile cases and rendered verdicts on them which were related to military, human rights, circular railway, government officials and rights of minorities.

As per the contents of the letter, Justice (retd) Ahmed and his family had serious threats and it was necessary to provide him and his family the same security which he was getting during his employment period to avoid any untoward incident.

Under Section 25 (1) of the Supreme Court rules, a retired CJP gets security after he attains superannuation, read the letter.

<picture></picture>

@murtazasolangi/Twitter

Confirming the security to the former chief justice of Pakistan, Interior Ministry noted the security was not being withdrawn from him and it would remain the same.

Following the retirement of Justice Ahmed on Feb 1, Justice Umar Ata Bandial had taken oath as the new Chief Justice of Pakistan on Wednesday and he will remain on the position till September 16, 2023.

It is pertinent to mention that a Supreme Court judge retires when he or she attains 65 years of age, while the new chief justice is selected according to the seniority level of the judges in the apex court.
