PM Imran raises voice for humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Sunday raised his voice for the Afghan people to join the international initiative to raise awareness about the humanitarian crisis in the war-torn country.

In a tweet, the PM said the unfolding crisis in Afghanistan was putting at risk millions of Afghans, especially children. He also shared a girl with #SaveAfghanLives.

The premier's comments come as the Taliban, the West and members of Afghan civil society meet in Oslo, Norway today (Sunday) to discuss the humanitarian aid in Afghanistan.

Hunger now threatens 23 million Afghans, or 55 per cent of the population, according to the United Nations, which says it needs $4.4 billion from donor countries this year to address the humanitarian crisis.

In his address at the extraordinary session of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC’s) Council of Foreign Ministers’ on Afghanistan in Islamabad on December 19, PM Imran stressed the need for an immediate response followed by a collective effort from all the parties to help Afghanistan as "chaos suits no one".

"Action must be taken immediately. Unless immediate action is taken, Afghanistan is heading to chaos," he had said.

The international community is waiting to see how the Taliban intend to govern Afghanistan, after having largely trampled on human rights during their first stint in power between 1996 and 2001. The world community has demanded of the new rulers to ensure basic rights of people, especially women rights.
