Twitter divided over Rizwan and Zainab's interaction during interview

Pakistani Twitter is divided over a moment from an interview last week between wicketkeeper batter Mohammad Rizwan and sports presenter Zainab Abbas during the Pakistan Cricket Board event, which was held to appreciate the national cricket team performance in the year 2021.

The event, was attended by the national T20 team, PCB chairman and other board members, was held in Lahore on January 15. Players were rewarded in the event and host Zainab interviewed them by going to their tables.

The wicketkeeper batter tried to avoid eye contact with Zainab when she asked him about his performance in the year and against India in the T20 World Cup. Skipper Babar Azam, Sarfraz Ahmed, and Shaheen Shah Afridi were also sharing the space.

Then, the host stood behind his chair when the wicketkeeper batter answered her question. She continued to conduct it from outside his line of vision.

It is this part that has divided Twitter with some praising Zainab for showing respect to the cricketer while others are calling Rizwan out for chauvinism.

One user, who seemed to kick start the debate on Twitter, lauded Zainab for her “great presence of mind” and reminded people about how in the past Rizwan spoke of his discomfort of being photographed with women.

“It’s not about shyness. A few things are personal. I respect women a lot and I don’t consider myself worthy to have pictures with our sisters and mothers when they come and ask for one because their standard is very high than mine. I urge them to not get displeased on such a reaction,” Rizwan had said in an interview with PakTV, a YouTube news channel when asked about refusing to take pictures with women.

But it didn't cut it for one user who called Rizwan “unprofessional.”

One user, also named Rizwan, praised the wicketkeeper batter.

Another apparently advised people to stick to their work rather than commenting on such an event.

One user commented on internet users' desperation for events to comment on.

Another user blamed the people for highlighting the part of event.

One user said: "Pakistani men really think their are only two ways; not looking at a woman at all or looking at her creepily. There is a third way, looking at a human being normally and maintaining eye contact while talking. It's extremely insulting to completely ignore someone's existence!"
