Lyricist Javed Akhtar took the lead and criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not acting against the “Bulli Bai” app.

The app displayed pictures of more than 100 Muslim women for auction, including renowned journalists and actresses. One of the most notable names on the list was Nobel laureate Malala Yousufzai’s.

One of the Indian journalists on the list took to Twitter and said, “It is very sad that as a Muslim woman you have to start your new year with this sense of fear & disgust.”

Another Twitter user wrote, “I come from an India where we Muslims women are being auctioned, bullied & harassed aiming to ‘silence’ us.”

According to woman on the auction list named Sayema this event is a “reflection on India’s broken justice system, a dilapidated law n order arrangement.”

The Twitter account of Rashtriya Ulama Council urged the government to act strongly and arrest the culprits instantly. “The action should not reflect only in the words of the FIR but in execution also,” it said.

Many users called it a problem of Islamophobia.

The auction of Muslim women on the “Bulli Bai” app was highlighted widely by global media. But some users found the coverage to be unfair.
