Lakki Marwat women protest against electricity, gas outages

Several burqa clad women in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Lakki Marwat district staged a sit-in on Tuesday to protest against electricity load shedding and gas outages.

The demonstrators took to the streets of the city of Lakki early morning, shouting slogans and holding placards demanding the government end gas and power outages, reported Dawn.com.

One of the elderly women, who didn’t reveal her identity, addressed the demonstrators and said, “Why did we come out of our homes? Because the government compelled us to take to the streets.”

She called out the PTI government for “14 hours of gas and 18 hours of electricity load shedding daily” and said the elected representatives fail to show up when they are needed. The women also burned electricity and gas bills during the protest.

The protest continued for six hours and local residents and men in large numbers joined the women.

The sit-in came to end after assurance from authorities, including the Peshawar Electric Supply Corporation and district administration.

The protest by women of Lakki Marwat not only stirred city officials but also caused a commotion on social media.
