K-Electric seeks Rs5.5 per unit increase in power tariff

The K-Electric, Karachi's sole power utility, on Thursday requested the National Electric and Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) to increase power tariff by Rs5.5 per unit under fuel adjustment charges for the month of November.

The power regulator will hear the plea submitted by the K-Electric on January 3, 2022.

The increase in power tariff would impose a burden of Rs60 billion on the consumers.

According to a Dawn News report, Nepra in November had notified an increase of Rs1.68 in base power for all domestic consumers and Rs1.39 for all other categories to meet the requirement of International Monetary Fund's (IMF) programme.

Earlier this month, the Nepra had approved K-Electric's request to increase fuel charge adjustment (FCA) for the month of September by Rs3.75 per unit.

The FCA is a mechanism that allows power companies to recover any legitimate increase in fuel cost.
