Faisalabad stripping: CCTV shows 'true story', video to be part of investigation

CCTV footage of the stripping and filming of four women at a market in Faisalabad that went viral on social media is to be made part of the investigation said police on Wednesday.

Journalist Yasif posted the video on Twitter saying: “Reality of Faisalabad incident…”

Authorities had arrested five of at least 10 suspects who assaulted the women after accusing them of theft. They were charged under various sections of the Penal Code including assault, use of criminal force against a woman and stripping her, insulting modesty or causing sexual harassment, punishment for rioting, and unlawful assembly guilty of an offence committed in prosecution of common object.

The video of the women being beaten and stripped was widely shared on social media on Tuesday and shocked the nation, already reeling from the violent imagery of the mob attack on Sri Lankan factory manager in Sialkot last Friday.

New CCTV footage shows the women enter the shop and pick up something. The shopkeeper tries to stop them, but then comes out of shop when the women didn’t listen.

He attempts to lock the door, to which the women resist and force their way out. The man is then seen grabbing two of the four women, beating them and calling others for help.

The women can be seen unbuttoning their clothes and stripping themselves. When they tried to run away, the women were caught by men and dragged into the shop.

The video is doing rounds on social media and responses to it reflect a lot of misogyny.

Many accused the women of playing the “women card.”

One user bashed the Aurat March and expressed relief this video had surfaced.

“Woman play the victim card once more and men get blamed for it,” said a user on Twitter.

Columnist Mehr Tarar said this disturbing event would make everything difficult for the real victims of abuse, harassment and violence.
