Abhinandan was captured by Pakistan after his MiG 21 Bison aircraft was shot down by Pakistan Air Force jet two years ago on February 27, 2019.

He was initially captured by locals in Azad Kashmir after he had ejected from his plane. Videos of his capture showed Abhinandan being rescued by Pakistani soldiers from a crown of angry locals.

The Indian wing commander was later handed over to India as a gesture of peace at the Wagah border on March 1, 2019.

The story told on the other side of the border, however, is the complete opposite.

Accoording to India Today, it was Abhinandan who shot down an F-16 over “Pakistan-occupied” Kashmir during Indian’s Balakot air strike. He’s credited by Indian to have been the only MiG 21 pilot ever to have shot down an F-16.

When news of Abhinandan receiving the Vir Chakra broke on the internet, Pakistanis on Twitter took it upon themselves to set the record straight.

“He ejected...We brought him to earth....world have seen visuals...slapped...chopped...then offered a cup of tea....sent back to home,” a user said in a tweet.

Pakistani diplomat Husham Ahmed said in a tweet that this is “How a state uses various tools to fabricate its own narratives, propagate disinformation and invent its own victories.”

Some users saw right through the Indian media for trying to “create” a narrative of their own, and called it out.

These users feel bad for Abhinandan for being reminded of the embarrassment every second month.

Twitter user Hussain Nadim sarcastically states what must have actually happened on that day two years ago.
