Monthlies: Local firm lauded for giving female employees paid period leaves

Social media users in Pakistan are lauding tech startup Swyft Logistics for being the first company in Pakistan to introduce paid period leaves, called “Monthlies”. All female employees at the company can avail up to 12 days of period leaves in a year.

Swyft Logistics, a two-year-old tech company, has a total of 65 female employees.

Speaking about the new period leaves policy in a video, the company's human resources manager said that the policy was introduced as the startup recognises the importance of health and well-being of its female employees. "We aim to start a conversation whereby policies like these become norm," said Mariyah Arif.

Men and women on Twitter alike are lauding the tech company for introducing this policy and “breaking the barriers.”

For one user, it was the realization of elusive “workplace goals".

Another wants Pakistan to make “this (period leaves) a law for every company who has females working for them.”

Fiza Farhan, a member of the UN Secretary-General’s panel on women’s economic empowerment, congratulated the startup on the policy.

Another user, Minha A. Khan, says that the company “wants to reduce stigma and end the perception of menstruation as an illness."

One user however thinks that 12 leaves are “too less.”
