Punjab police resentful of Islamabad's dealing with TLP: report

Punjab police have resented the federal government's decision to once again go soft on the proscribed Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) after Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed announced release of the party's activists and workers and withdrawing cases against its members, according to a Dawn report.

In a tweet on Sunday, the interior minister announced the release of 350 TLP workers thus far.

In a press conference on Sunday morning he said that he hadn't wanted to head the government negotiating team with the TLP but returned to Pakistan because Prime Minister Imran Khan asked him to do so. The federal minister was in Dubai on two-day leave to watch Pakistan play India but returned early on Saturday to join the negotiating team.

One social media user said Rasheed wanted the Punjab government to handle the matter and left for Dubai as the federal government's decision was once again to go soft on the TLP.

Quoting the police sources, Dawn report stated the security personnel sacrificed lives and sustained injuries while performing their duties during violent protests by the proscribed party. However, every time the government reconciled with the group and disregarded the attacks on security forces as well as damage to public property.

At least three policemen were killed and many others sustained injured during the recent clashes between security officials and the TLP who announced a long march to Islamabad in a protest against the detention of the party's leader Saad Rizvi.
