Adviser to Prime Minister on Finance and Revenue Shaukat Tarin has returned to Washington to join ongoing talks with the International Monetary Fund, according to a tweet by a ministry official on Tuesday.

"Media reports related to inconclusive talks are baseless," read a tweet by Muzzammil Aslam.

Tarin is in Washington for latest talks with the IMF for the release of $1 billion tranche from a $6 billion Extended Fund Facility (EFF). The discussions are scheduled from October 4 to 15.

When the adviser first arrived in United States, he held the position of finance minister. However, his six-month tenure as a non-elected member of Cabinet expired on Saturday followed by rumours that talks with the IMF have failed.

Tarin, on Sunday rejected rumours of failure of talks.

On Monday, the federal government appointed Tarin as adviser to PM, saying in the statement that his position would be equivalent to finance minister.

IMF’s Middle East and Central Asia Department Director Jihad Azour while addressing a press conference on Tuesday said the talks between the IMF and the government of Pakistan on the Sixth Review of the $6 billion EFF have progressed to a “very good step”, according to an MG link article.

“The IMF mission to Pakistan and the authorities [government of Pakistan] are currently in the process of the discussion around the Sixth Review of the [EFF] program. And the discussions are progressing around the various pillars of the program and the measures that the government of Pakistan is currently contemplating,” said Azour.

“The progress has gone in a very good step and the [IMF] mission with the [government of Pakistan] authorities is going through various details,” he added.
