Kabul and Saigon: Images of two US departures widely shared on Twitter

It couldn't be more different but it also couldn't be more similar: The images of the US helicopter pulling out of Saigon in 1975 looked as familiar to the helicopter departing Kabul on Sunday.

And the message wasn't lost, certainly not on Twitter as users took to sharing those images juxtaposed to one another, lamenting how little had changed.

US leaders said the US pullout from Afghanistan was reminiscent to the country's withdrawal from Saigon at the end of the Vietnam conflict in 1975.

The photo of evacuees boarding a helicopter on the roof of a building in Saigon represents that defeat and so too does the image coming out of Kabul.

Filmmaker Michael Moore wrote America had lost another war.

Discussing the imminent fall of the Afghan government, on Friday US Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell said: “President [Joe] Biden’s decisions have us hurtling toward an even worse sequel to the humiliating fall of Saigon in 1975."

Although Biden has said he does not regret his decision to withdraw troops, one user pointed to the president's history in all these years:

The sentiment of abandonment by the US was widely expressed in a few of the tweets Aaj collated below:

But some felt the comparison was unfair.
