Shehbaz joins condemnation of Modi's "Partition Horrors Remembrance Day"

As Pakistanis celebrate Independence on August 14, India's prime minister chose to mark the day as "Partition Horrors Remembrance Day" which was met with a sharp rebuke by Pakistan's Foreign Office and now leaders like Shehbaz Sharif have chimed in to condemn it.

Sharif was referring to Modi's tweet in which he said August 14 will be remembered as a day where millions lost their lives to the violence that erupted during Partition.

Hours after Modi's tweet, the Union Home Ministry notified August 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day.

India's Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said the declaration of such a day would remind the present and future generations of Indians of the pain and suffering faced by the people during the partition, it said.

Pakistan's Foreign Office was quick to respond and termed Modi's tweet a "political stunt" meant to sow the seeds of division. In their statement, they wrote that no modern state is so much in contradiction with itself as the Indian one.

“We are sure that the people of goodwill in India would completely reject this political and publicity stunt that only seeks to divide,” they said.

It is shameful that the practitioners of Hindutva ideology would so hypocritically and one-sidedly invoke the tragic events and mass migration that occurred in the wake of Independence in 1947, the FO statement said.

PML-N leader wasn't the only person to echo many sentiments on social media against Partition Horrors Remembrance Day.

Indian author and political leader described it as a way to use the past to sow seeds of hatred.

However, Modi's declaration was met with support in India and this tweet is just one example of the admiration the prime minister received.
