Sindh gov't appoints Murtaza Wahab as Karachi administrator

The Sindh government appointed Sindh Law and Environment Adviser Murtaza Wahab as Karachi's new administrator in a notification it issued on Thursday .

Wahab replaces Laeeq Ahmed but will continue to act as the spokesman for the Sindh government as well as an adviser on law to Sindh Chief Minister.

In a tweet Wahab thanked the PPP leadership for his new role:

He also retweeted a user's tweet which carried the notification of his appointment.

The opposition, however, described the appointment as a breach of an earlier understanding made with the federal government where they had said they would appoint a non-political person to the role of the administrator.

Leader of Opposition in Sindh Assembly, Haleem Adil Shaikh, criticized the move. "By breaking the agreement, the Pakistan People’s Party has given a clear message that it has nothing to do with the development of Karachi,” he was quoted in the News as saying. He added that this move showed the PPP's anti Karachi position and that voters had rejected Wahab in the 2018 elections.

But Wahab's appointment has also been met with praise especially on Twitter where people have said the city needs a young, dynamic leader to solve the many problems the provincial capital faces.

Wahab said that even though Governor Imran Ismail had opposed his appointment, he wished him good luck when he met with him Thursday.

In an interview to Geo, Wahab admitted that tensions between the provincial government and local bodies has been tense and as a result, problems did not get solved.

"Even a little bit of change will make it clear to the masses as to what a Karachi administrator can or cannot do with the same set of laws and powers," he explained.
