Pakistanis celebrate Eid ul Azha as Covid cases rise

Pakistanis marked a second consecutive Eid ul Azha under the dark shadow of coronavirus, this time with the Delta variant posing a new threat.

The government has asked people to mute their celebrations to avoid a potential fourth wave.

Media outlets reported that people went to mosques to offer Eid prayers and were asked to follow SOPs. The government issued special directives to ensure peaceful observation during the three-day holiday.

There are reports from various parts of the country where hospitals are saying they are full to the capacity with covid positive patients.

Asad Umar, head of the NCOC, which issues coronavirus statistics on a daily basis, took to Twitter to wish Eid Mubarak and also ask people to exercise care in their celebrations.

The Prime Minister and President of Pakistan also issued Eid celebratory messages.

Imran Khan said sacrificing an animal on this holy festival manifested that a person has to sacrifice human desires for the achievement of the highest ideals.

In his message Arif Alvi asked people to help the needy and poor during Eid.

"Giving sacrifices to achieve an objective is the key to success," he said.
