PM's rape remarks reflect his 'criminal mentality:' Maryam Nawaz

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz on Wednesday criticized Prime Minister Imran Khan for his controversial rape remarks where he linked the way a woman dresses to the alarming situation of sexual violence against women and children.

The PML-N leader said that Pakistan needed freedom from the mentality that holds the victims of sexual violence responsible for crimes committed on them.

"What about the little children that are sexually abused? Are they subjected to it [sexual violence] because of their dressing?" she asked, adding that the prime minister "should be ashamed of his statement."

Nawaz said Khan has insulted rape victims. "They will be ashamed as you have held them responsible," she said.

When asked about her father's return, Nawaz said she would call him back to the country instantly if anyone can assure her that Nawaz Sharif's life would not be in danger.

Khan's remarks on rape:

While responding to a query by Jonathan Swan of Axios for HBO in a recent interview about the correlation between rape and women's clothing, Khan said that it is common sense that if a woman is wearing “very few clothes, it will have an impact on the men unless they are robots.”

The PM further elaborated that "the concept of purdah is avoid temptation in the society.” He stated: “We don’t have discos here, we don’t have nightclubs. So, it is a completely different society, way of life here. So if you raise temptation in society to a point, and all these young guys have nowhere to go, it has consequences in the society.”
