Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday has expressed solidarity with India as the country battles with a dangerous and worsening wave of COVID-19.

Taking to Twitter, the prime minister offered comforting words and prayers for the speedy recovery of those suffering from the novel disease:

"I want to express our solidarity with the people of India as they battle a dangerous wave of COVID-19. Our prayers for a speedy recovery go to all those suffering from the pandemic in our neighborhood & the world," the premier said and add, "We must fight this global challenge confronting humanity together."

The prime minister's remarks came as a record-breaking surge in India has brought down the health care system of the country to its knees. India has reported 346,786 new cases of Covid-19 on Saturday. The South Asia country has set a world record for infections for the third day in a row during the coronavirus pandemic.

Due to the surge in infections, there is a severe shortage of oxygen cylinders in several states with hospitals running at full capacity. Thousands of critical patients are forced to share oxygen beds due to overcrowded hospitals. While several countries have banned flights to and from India.
