NA-75 bye-polls: Counting underway in Daska

Polling in the high stake constituency of NA-75 has stopped and counting of votes is underway. According to unofficial votes from some of the polling stations, PML-N's Nosheen Iftikhar is in the lead so far with 12,574 votes, whereas PTI's Ali Asjad Malhi is trailing with 8,307 votes.

Voting began today (Saturday) at 8:00 am and concluded at 5:00 pm. Those who arrived at the polling stations after 5:00 pm were turned away, however, those already present on the premises of the polling station were allowed to cast their vote.

Polling took place in a highly monitored environment with ECP Chief Sikaner Sulta Raja personally supervising the re-polling process from the provincial office in Lahore. Out of a total of 360 polling stations, 47 were declared highly sensitive and close-circuit TV cameras were installed to monitor any suspicious activity.

Moreover, in order to ensure transparent re-election in NA-75, the provincial election commission had assigned Pakistan Rangers the task of safe transportation of presiding officers and the polling material to and back from the polling stations to the office of the returning officer.

The bye-poll in Daska initially took place on 19 February after the seat became vacant after the death of Syed Iftikhar Ul Hassan from PML-N, however, the result was declared void by the ECP on 25 February amid reports of violent clashes and alleged rigging that took place on different polling stations. 20 presiding officers had also disappeared from their respective polling stations and could not be contacted for several hours.
