PDM announces to jointly contest Senate polls, long march to Islamabad

Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) on Thursday has announced to jointly contest the upcoming Senate elections. The announcement came after the leadership of the anti-government coalition met in Islamabad to devise a future strategy of action.

PDM chief Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman briefed the media after concluding the meeting. The JUI-F chief said that all opposition parties have decided to jointly contest the Senate polls under the banner of PDM.

It is pertinent to mention that the former president and PPP co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari had put forward this suggestion a few days ago.

On the subject of the long march, Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman said opposition parties will go to Islamabad on March 26. According to sources, the march will be called the 'Mehngai march' to show solidarity with the masses against roaring inflation.

The JUI-F chief announced that the opposition alliance rejects the constitutional amendment to implement the open ballot method for Senate polls. He alleged that the PTI-led government is afraid their own members would not support their nominees.

Fazal also made comments about the controversial appointment of former Supreme Court Justice(r) Azmat Saeed as the chief of Broadsheet probing commission. The PDM chief said that the opposition will not allow a controversial figure to head the commission.

The PDM leadership had met in Islamabad on Thursday as the differences between the PML-N and PPP leadership had started to become quite visible.

PML-N leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Tuesday had declared that PPP will have to be disbarred from PDM if it decides against the leadership's decision to submit resignations. However, no decision regarding en masse resignations has been taken in the meeting.

It is important to mention that the anti-government coalition in December had announced to give resignations from National and provincial assemblies in a bid to build pressure on the government. However, PPP leadership encouraged the anti-government coalition not to haste the resignations.
