Twitter on Tuesday suspended popular Bollywood singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya's Twitter account over sexist abuse after he tweeted derogatory remarks about a female student leader.

In the tweet he implied that Shehla Rashid, a student leader at Delhi's leading Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), had been paid for sex.

According to Hindustan Times, Abhijeet retweeted about the JNU student on May 22, “There is rumour she took money for two hours and didn’t satisfy the client... big racket.”

Twitter took the step after users accused the 58-year-old singer of using “inappropriate” and “insulting” language. “Account Suspended: This account has been suspended…,” stated the message from Twitter on his handle.

Ms Rashid then thanked people for their support and wrote.

“Sincere thanks to everyone for the support. Abhijeet had to delete his tweet. His Twitter account has also been suspended,” Shehla tweeted after suspension.

Bhattacharya seems unaffected as he said, he "did not give a damn" about the suspension as the "the entire nation is with me," according to BBC.

He had sent the tweet in response to a comment by Ms Rashid alleging that government ministers were running sex rackets in various states.

Despite his derogatory tweet, the singer is getting a lot of support by users who have begun tweeting with the hashtag #IStandWithAbhijeet.

This is not the first time Bhattacharya has got into trouble over his tweets. He was arrested and later released on bail after a journalist, Swati Chaturvedi, registered a police complaint against him last July. —Business Recorder
