Bulgaria wins Eurovision amid protests against Israel

Bulgaria won the Eurovision ‌Song Contest for the first time on Saturday at a final marked by five countries’ boycott over Israel’s military assault in Gaza.

Bangaranga, sung by Dara, came ahead of second-placed Israel when points from a public vote and national juries were tallied.

The grand final of the 70th Eurovision Song Contest was held at Vienna’s Wiener Stadthalle arena, where Bulgarian singer Dara clinched first place with her performance of Bangaranga, earning 516 points from a combination of juries and public votes.

Israel finished second with 343 points, while Romania took third place with 296 points.

Protests and boycotts

Five countries — Spain, Slovenia, the Netherlands, Iceland, and Ireland — boycotted the contest in protest of Israel’s participation.

During the final, Israeli performer Noam Bettan, who appeared third on stage, faced protests inside the arena as audience members waved Palestinian flags.

Booing was also reported when Israel’s public vote results were announced.

Amnesty International Secretary General Agnes Callamard condemned Israel’s involvement during the broadcast, stating on social media: “There should be no stage for Israel at Eurovision while there is an ongoing genocide, unlawful occupation and apartheid.”

In Vienna, more than 1,000 pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered at Christian Broda Square and marched toward the arena, carrying banners reading “Don’t celebrate genocide” and “Israel, killer of children and people,” while chanting slogans such as “Boycott Israel” and “No stage for genocide.”

Activists, artists, and civil society groups urged the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) to exclude Israel from the contest.

They called on countries, including Austria, to end political, economic, and military cooperation with Israel.

A separate event, Song Protest – No Stage for Genocide, took place on Friday at Maria-Theresien Square in Vienna, drawing international artists and activists expressing solidarity with Palestinians and criticising the EBU’s stance, according to Anadolu news agency.

Broadcasters speak out

Several European broadcasters also voiced criticism.

Spain’s RTVE displayed a message supporting “peace and justice for Palestine” at the start of its broadcast, temporarily blacking out the screen to deliver the message in both Spanish and English.

Belgium’s Flemish public broadcaster VRT warned it may reconsider future Eurovision participation unless the EBU changes its policies on contested entries.

Declining viewership

The controversy surrounding Israel’s participation coincided with a drop in television ratings across several countries.

In Italy, 1.87 million viewers watched the first semifinal on RAI, down from 2.49 million the previous year.

In the Netherlands, viewership fell 42% compared to 2025, marking the country’s lowest-rated Eurovision semifinal since 2012.

Fall in viewership was also reported in the UK, Sweden, and Belgium.

Javed Jaffrey's wife cheated of Rs16.24 crore, businessman arrested

Mumbai Police’s Crime Branch has arrested a businessman in connection with an alleged fraud exceeding Rs16.24 crore targeting Habiba Jaffrey, wife of Bollywood actor and comedian Javed Jaffrey.

The property cell arrested Nishit Patel following the fraud’s exposure.

An FIR registered at Khar Police Station names six accused, including Mahesh Patil, an Assistant Commissioner with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). A court has remanded Patel to police custody until May 19.

According to investigators, the scheme began in April 2024 when Habiba Jaffrey received a BMC property tax notice regarding her Andheri flat.

A man identified as Ali Raza then connected her with Patil, who pitched a supposedly lucrative investment opportunity in a Bandra redevelopment project and directed her to route funds through Nishit Patel.

The accused convinced the Jaffrey family that they held close ties to prominent builders and senior government officials. They promised high returns, premium property, and swift possession to secure the family’s trust.

Police say the conspirators fabricated documents, including forged letters of interest and fake registration papers, to make the scheme appear legitimate.

Habiba Jaffrey’s funds were subsequently moved through multiple shell company bank accounts. Patel has since admitted to preparing the fraudulent documents, according to investigators.

Police are now raiding multiple locations in search of Patil and other absconding accused.

Investigators are also examining whether other prominent Mumbai residents invested in the same project and may also have been defrauded.

This is not Patil’s first brush with controversy. He faced allegations of illegal investment in the same Bandra project previously, resulting in a forced leave of absence last year, charges he denied at the time.

Eurovision Song Contest final takes the stage amid Gaza boycott

The Eurovision Song Contest’s final takes place in Vienna on Saturday, with the organisers hoping the annual show of glitz and Europop will be a success despite five countries’ withdrawal over Israel’s participation.

The ‌run-up to the event — a kitsch and usually good-natured competition between pop acts from countries across Europe and beyond, now in its 70th year — has been overshadowed by a boycott of the event by the public broadcasters of heavyweights Spain, the Netherlands and Ireland, as well as Iceland and Slovenia.

Those countries are protesting Israel’s participation in the wake of the country’s military assault on Palestinians, killing thousands of women and children.

Ireland’s RTE said that to take part would be “unconscionable given the appalling loss of lives in Gaza and the humanitarian crisis there”.

Smallest contest in two decades

“We’re the world’s biggest music show, and any global event like ours, be it art or sport, is going to collide with the world sometimes,” contest director Martin Green told Reuters before the contest kicked off this week.

“We try and protect Eurovision as a neutral space where we can bring artists together through music and demonstrate that maybe the world can be better than it is sometimes.”

The boycotts cut the number of contest entries to 35, the smallest since 2003, which will almost ‌certainly reduce the global television viewership of an event that last year was estimated at 166 million people, more than the Super Bowl’s roughly 128 million.

There will be 25 countries, including Israel, taking part in Saturday’s final.

Boos and a formal warning

The mood in the Austrian capital has been tense and subdued, with protests during the week over Israel’s participation drawing small crowds.

Police are still bracing for protests on Saturday and anticipate possible “blockades and disruption attempts”.

A protest is due to pass the contest venue several hours before the event begins at 9pm.

There was a brief disruption during Tuesday’s semi-final, when one protester chanted “Stop, stop the genocide” and “Free, free Palestine” within range of a television microphone.

He and three others “were removed from the arena for disruptive behaviour,” the European Broadcasting Union and Austrian national broadcaster ORF, the organiser and host, said in a joint statement.

Israel’s entrant Noam Bettan, told Reuters he heard some booing as he took the stage.

The EBU issued a formal warning to Israeli public broadcaster KAN over videos featuring Bettan calling on viewers to vote for him a maximum of 10 times.

Such campaigns are now against the rules after a similar lobbying effort last year.

KAN said it follows the rules, and the videos were taken down.

Finland’s entry, Liekinheitin, or Flamethrower, featuring violinist Linda Lampenius and pop singer Pete Parkkonen on a burning set, is the favourite this year, followed by Australia’s Eclipse, sung by Delta Goodrem.

All you need to know about the Eurovision Song Contest final

Austria hosts the final of the Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna on Saturday, which this year has been marked by the boycott of five countries protesting the participation of Israel.

What is the Eurovision Song Contest?

It is a celebration of pop music, high camp and diversity now in its 70th year.

Songs from countries ‌across Europe, and now as far afield as Australia, compete.

The most famous song to win was Waterloo by Sweden’s ABBA in 1974, while perhaps the best-known winning singer was Canadian Celine Dion in 1988, competing for Switzerland, with Ne partez pas sans moi (Don’t leave without me).

Sweden and Ireland hold the most titles with seven each.

Organisers say it is the world’s biggest music show, drawing more viewers than the Super Bowl.

How do you win?

Points for each of the 25 finalist songs are awarded in one of two ways.

Diljit Dosanjh’s US citizenship claim goes viral — has he given up India?

Rumours surrounding the citizenship status of Diljit Dosanjh have triggered widespread discussion on social media, with viral claims suggesting the Punjabi star may have given up Indian citizenship.

According to Indian media reports, Diljit allegedly obtained United States citizenship in 2022 and has since been travelling on a US passport instead of an Indian one.

The reports further claimed that after acquiring American citizenship in September 2022, he stopped using his Indian passport and now enters India on an e-visa.

The reports also suggested that the actor-singer may not possess an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, adding to speculation about his nationality status.

Details circulating online claim Diljit’s last Indian passport was issued in Mumbai in 2018.

His wife, Sandeep Kaur, is reportedly already a US citizen, while Diljit is said to have listed California as his place of residence in official documents.

The speculation has surprised many fans, particularly because the singer is widely associated with Punjabi identity and culture.

During concerts and public appearances, Diljit frequently raises the slogan “Main Hoon Punjab,” reflecting his strong connection to his roots.

Despite the growing debate, Diljit has so far remained silent and has neither confirmed nor denied reports regarding any change in citizenship.

The actor recently dismissed rumours about entering politics after a group of retired officials and professionals reportedly urged him to join Punjab politics. Responding on social media, he said, “Never. My job is only to entertain people,” making it clear that he intends to remain focused on the entertainment industry.

Amid the ongoing speculation, Diljit continues to remain active in Indian cinema. He recently appeared in “Border 2” alongside Sunny Deol and is also set to star in his upcoming film “Main Wapas Aaunga”, scheduled for release on June 12, 2026.

Whether Diljit chooses to publicly address the rumours or allow the debate to continue remains unclear.

Drake drops surprise triple album release in streaming shock move

Canadian rapper Drake has surprised fans by releasing three albums at the same time, in a move that triggered widespread reactions across streaming platforms and social media.

The albums titled Iceman, Habibti and Maid of Honour were released simultaneously on May 15, catching listeners off guard after weeks of teasers linked to his ongoing “Iceman” livestream series.

Fans expecting a single album instead found a three-project rollout, with each record exploring a different sound and style.

According to initial details, Iceman focuses on darker rap production and includes collaborations with artists such as Future and 21 Savage.

Maid of Honour features a more melodic and upbeat direction with appearances from Central Cee and Popcaan, while Habibti leans towards moody R&B sounds, including a collaboration with PARTYNEXTDOOR.

Shortly after release, users reported heavy traffic on streaming platforms including Spotify and Apple Music, with some experiencing glitches and delays as demand surged.

The release follows Drake’s recent livestream promotions and comes after his publicly followed feud with rapper Kendrick Lamar, which has drawn continued attention to his lyrics and recent output.

Fans online reacted with surprise and debate, with some praising the scale of the release and others questioning the decision to drop three albums at once.

Farhadi pushes creative limits in Cannes film

Two-time Oscar-winning Iranian director Asghar Farhadi allowed himself to go outside his cinema red lines and play with structure in his Paris-set drama “Parallel Tales,” he told Reuters ahead of its Cannes Film Festival premiere on Thursday.

“There ‌is a more formal playfulness and things that I hadn’t done in my other films … Things that were previously a red line for me. I wouldn’t do them at all,” he said.

“But here, in the structure of the film, I did them. From this perspective, it was a very valuable experience,” said the filmmaker who has been living outside Iran since 2023.

“Parallel Tales,” whose cast includes Isabelle Huppert and Vincent Cassel, is Farhadi’s fifth time competing for the festival’s Palme d’Or top prize.

He won the Berlin Film Festival’s top prize in 2011 for “A Separation,” which went on to win the Oscar for best foreign language film, becoming the first Iranian movie to win that award.

He won the same Oscar five years later with “The Salesman,” though he boycotted the ceremony in protest against the travel ban affecting several Muslim-majority countries during US President Donald Trump’s first presidential term.

Master or precision

“Parallel Tales” ‌follows a thief with no place to call his own, played by Adam Bessa, whose good deed lands him a position helping out a reclusive writer (Huppert) who dreams up a sordid story about the people working in a sound studio across the street, played by Cassel, Virginie Efira and Pierre Niney.

The thief takes a manuscript of her story and presents it as his own to one of the studio workers, who, by sharing it with the others, tangles them all up in a tale of spying and distrust.

“We were expecting a master, and he was really impressive the way he was able to pay so much attention to every detail,” said Niney, recalling how Farhadi put drops of water on the costumes himself to ensure they looked as wet as he wanted.

“And that was like this during the whole process. He had such a precise idea of what he wanted.”

It's Father Ted, Raphael or Gaza documentaries for Eurovision's boycotters

Broadcasters boycotting Saturday’s Eurovision final over Israel’s participation will instead offer their viewers a rerun of the sitcom “Father Ted”, an alternative music show featuring Spanish divo Raphael or documentaries about ‌Gaza.

The song contest that drew 166 million viewers in 2025 is in crisis over Israel’s conflict in Gaza, with broadcasters in Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Iceland pulling out over the killing of Palestinian civilians and journalists.

Israel’s contestant Noam Bettan said he was booed by pro-Palestinian protesters when performing in the semi-final on Tuesday in the host city of Vienna.

Participating broadcasters pay a fee, choose a contestant from their nation and channel voting for the competition, which is usually a good-natured and zany celebration of Europe’s pop music and cultural diversity, now in its 70th year.

Irish national broadcaster RTE said it would instead air an episode of the hit 1990s comedy show “Father Ted” in which the hapless Catholic priest and a colleague are chosen as Ireland’s Eurovision contender to ensure the country does not win again and have to endure the cost of hosting.

Ireland won the contest four times in the 1990s.

RTE’s decision to air the episode was strongly criticised by one of the show’s co-creators.

Graham Linehan, a critic of Ireland’s pro-Palestinian stance, said on X that he was disgusted by how the episode was being used and accused RTE of antisemitism. A spokesperson for RTE declined to comment on his remarks.

Most Eurovision fans in Ireland will still be able to watch the show, however, on the BBC broadcaster, as British television channels are widely available.

Alternative viewing

Viewers in Spain will be offered an alternative show featuring local musicians, including former Eurovision finalists Chanel and Raphael, one of the best-selling Latin music ‌artists in history.

State broadcaster TVE’s director of content production Ana Maria Bordas, said the programme would have special significance because it would be aired on the UN’s International Day of Living Together in Peace.

Slovenia’s RTV will air a series of documentaries about the Gaza conflict called “Voices of Palestine,” said Natalija Gorščak, president of the management board.

“I would like to point out that every week of January 27, the Holocaust Day, we air the documentaries and films remembering the holocaust,” Gorščak said.

The Netherlands and Iceland will be broadcasting the show despite refusing to participate.

“We are broadcasting it with Icelandic commentary. This is still a popular programme in Iceland, and it has been broadcast here for a long time, both when we have been participating and not,“ said a spokesperson for Icelandic broadcaster RUV.

Dutch broadcaster NOS said it was its duty to make important events available to a broad public. Some have said the decision to broadcast the show undermined the boycott.

Even in participating countries, those opposed to Israel’s inclusion are staging their own protests.

In Belgium, organisers of an alternative festival this week are encouraging people to hold parties to watch it instead of Eurovision.

Belgian state broadcaster said its viewing numbers for the Eurovision semi-finals were down by half compared to last year, which they attributed in part to Israel’s participation.

The European Broadcasting Union, which organises the event, has not directly addressed the boycotts but has stressed that the contest is meant to be non-political.

Man who helped supply ketamine to Matthew Perry sentenced to two years in prison

A man who helped supply “Friends” star Matthew Perry with the drug ketamine before the actor’s overdose death in 2023 was ‌sentenced to two years in prison on Wednesday.

Erik Fleming had pleaded guilty in August 2024 to conspiracy to distribute ketamine and distribution of ketamine resulting in death.

Prosecutors said Fleming, a former licensed drug addiction counsellor, purchased vials of ketamine from a dealer and sold them to Perry’s live-in personal assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, who injected Perry with a fatal dose.

Judge Sherilyn Garnett also sentenced Fleming to three years of supervised probation following his prison term, a Justice Department spokesperson said.

Medical examiners concluded that Perry died from the acute effects of ketamine, which, combined with other ‌factors, caused the actor to lose consciousness and drown in his hot tub in October 2023. He was 54 years old.

Perry had publicly acknowledged decades of substance abuse, including periods that overlapped with the height of his fame playing the sardonic but charming Chandler Bing on the 1990s hit NBC television comedy “Friends.”

Ketamine, a short-acting anaesthetic with hallucinogenic properties, is prescribed to treat depression and anxiety, but it has also gained popularity as an illicit party drug among recreational users.

Fleming was the fourth of five people to be sentenced in connection with Perry’s death.

Indian singer Talwiinder faces backlash after sharing stage with Hasan Raheem

Indian singer Talwiinder has come under criticism on social media after appearing alongside Pakistani singer Hasan Raheem during a concert in Toronto, sparking debate over artistic collaborations between performers from India and Pakistan amid strained ties between the two countries.

According to a Hindustan Times report, the controversy began after Talwiinder joined Hasan Raheem on stage during a concert in the Canadian city. Videos and photographs of the two artists singing together, embracing and performing informally quickly went viral on social media.

Later, Talwiinder shared highlights from the concert on Instagram and wrote that a “dream came true in Toronto”, triggering mixed reactions online.

Critics argued that such collaborations were inappropriate given the current tensions between Pakistan and India. Some social media users posted harsh comments, including “shame on you”, targeting the Indian singer for sharing the stage with a Pakistani artist.

However, many users defended Talwiinder, saying music and art should rise above politics and borders. Supporters described the joint appearance as a symbol of cultural harmony rather than political endorsement.

This is not the first time Talwiinder has found himself at the centre of an online debate. The singer has previously made headlines over personal and professional matters, including rumours linking him to actress Disha Patani.

Talwiinder began his music career on digital platforms and gained popularity through songs including “Khamoshi”, “Dhundhala” and “Fuck Love”. In 2024, he released his debut album “Misfit”, which further boosted his profile.

Jonathan Anderson debuts Dior Cruise show in Los Angeles

French fashion house Christian Dior’s new creative director, Jonathan Anderson, unveiled his first Cruise collection on Wednesday night in ‌Los Angeles, transforming the Los Angeles County Museum of Art into a dazzling catwalk that fused high fashion with California culture.

Guests, including “The Queen’s Gambit” star Anya Taylor-Joy, Oscar-winning actor Al Pacino and singer Miley Cyrus, underscored the show’s Hollywood ties.

For the Cruise collection, Anderson drew on themes of cinema, California’s natural landscape and vintage car culture. Guests were seated among classic automobiles as simulated fog drifted across the runway.

Models emerged in looks evoking Hollywood icons such as Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren and Audrey Hepburn, with shimmering, fringed and layered designs, off-the-shoulder silhouettes, and accents of ruffled scarves and flowers in bloom.

Blurring the line between runway and stage, Anderson introduced theatrical elements, styling models as actors, directors and artists in a nod to the entertainment industry.

Standout pieces included a sparkly red cocktail dress, a shimmering pink trench coat with matching sunglasses, a black-and-grey patterned suit jacket, and a button-down shirt and jeans - a range of looks tied to industry archetypes.

In menswear, the focus shifted to sharp geometric shadowing, including grey wool flannels recalling the film noir genre.

Some models wore dramatic feathered ‌hats spelling out “Dior” in large, stylised lettering, adding a playful architectural note.

A buttercup-yellow dress embellished with rosettes ushered in a softer palette, with warm yellows and oranges inspired by the California poppy, the state flower.

Some models fully embodied the bloom in a gown of layered orange ruffles resembling petals.

The juxtaposition of vintage cars with vibrant, sunlit hues throughout the show captured the essence of Los Angeles as a city of contrasts.

Anderson made history in June 2025 when he was appointed Dior’s head of creation across all divisions - menswear, womenswear, couture and accessories - becoming the first designer since Christian Dior to oversee the entire house.

He joined the LVMH-owned label in April 2025 and debuted his menswear collection just months later, quickly establishing himself as part of a new generation reshaping the luxury industry during a prolonged slowdown.

Before Dior, the 41-year-old Northern Irish designer spent 11 years as creative director of Spanish luxury house Loewe.

Cruise, or resort, collections - presented in addition to the traditional biannual fashion calendar - are often staged in destination locations, allowing brands to link their designs to a specific cultural or geographic narrative.

Comedian Conan O’Brien will return to host the Academy Awards in 2027 for a third straight year, ‌broadcaster ABC said on Tuesday, after the former late-night TV host drew positive reviews and helped lift Oscars viewership from pandemic‑era lows.

Viewership for the Oscars telecast reached a five-year high in 2025 with 19.7 million viewers when O’Brien hosted for the first time.

The audience dropped to 17.9 million this year, according to ratings data from Nielsen.

ABC announced O’Brien’s return during a Walt Disney presentation to advertisers in New York.

Disney owns ABC and Hulu, which will stream the next Oscars ceremony in March.

The ‌63-year-old O’Brien, an Emmy-winning comedian, is best known for hosting the late-night talk shows “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” “The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien” and “Conan.”

He currently hosts the HBO Max travel show “Conan O’Brien Must Go” and the podcast “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend.”

Viewership for awards shows has been declining for years as TV audiences have shifted to streaming and social media.

The ceremony hit a low point in 2021 with roughly 9.5 million viewers.

Viewership for awards shows has been declining for years as TV audiences have shifted to streaming and social media.

The ceremony hit a low point in 2021 with roughly 9.5 million viewers.

Alia Bhatt turns heads in pink gown at Cannes

Indian actor Alia Bhatt made a striking second appearance at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, stepping onto the red carpet in a blush pink strapless gown during the opening ceremony and premiere of The Electric Kiss.

The structured corset gown featured sculpted detailing with soft drapes flowing around the arms.

She paired the look with a pink gemstone necklace and matching earrings, while keeping her makeup minimal with nude lips, soft eye makeup and loose waves.

The appearance marked another major moment in Alia’s growing Cannes presence following her debut at the festival in 2025.

Earlier in the day, the actor shared another fashion look inspired by 1950s silhouettes.

Designed by Yash Patil, the outfit featured a sculpted bodice, drop waist and voluminous skirt layered with ombré silk organza and tulle.

The design also included hand-painted artwork by Basuri Chokshi inspired by the French Riviera, featuring lavender fields and coastal landscapes.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India at the festival, Alia questioned Bollywood’s continued focus on male-led box office success.

“When we talk about box office and numbers, there is a conversation that comes up pretty often, which is 75% of the movie-going audience is male, so we need to cater to the masses,” she said.

Alia added that storytelling should matter more than gender when evaluating films.

“So, whether it stars a man or a woman, that should not matter. It is the storytelling that should matter. I’m just hoping we have more of that,” she said.

As a global ambassador for L’Oréal Paris, Alia also appeared in the brand’s Cannes 2026 campaign visuals at Hotel Martinez alongside Viola Davis, Eva Longoria and Helen Mirren.

The campaign visuals triggered debate online after fans questioned the absence of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan from the spotlight imagery, sparking wider discussions on legacy and representation in global beauty campaigns.

Mehwish Hayat calls item song ‘Billi’ the best decision of her career

Pakistani film and television star Mehwish Hayat has described performing the hit item song “Billi” as one of the best decisions of her career, revealing new details about her early journey into films.

The actress, who has recently returned to the spotlight following the success of the TV drama “Dayan”, spoke candidly about her professional journey during a recent interview.

Mehwish said moving from television dramas to films was a “big and bold” step that could have gone either way.

Recalling the filming of “Billi”, she said she was exhausted, physically injured and extremely nervous during the shoot. Despite the pressure, she remained confident about her “film face” — something veteran actor Javed Sheikh had previously pointed out to her during a drama shoot.

The actress said directors Nabeel Qureshi and Fizza Ali Meerza approached her after seeing her performances and convinced her to take on the project.

“I did it, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I ever made,” she said, adding that the filmmakers ensured the song was shot in a way that made it feel like an organic part of the film rather than a standalone dance number.

Actor Fahad Mustafa, who also appeared in the interview, shared a humorous incident from the shoot. He said the owner of the filming location became so engrossed in watching Mehwish perform that he accidentally fell from a height.

Fahad praised Mehwish as an exceptional performer, saying the audience’s reactions during the shoot reflected the energy and charisma of her performance.

Fans are now set to see Mehwish Hayat and Fahad Mustafa together in the upcoming horror-comedy film Zombied, scheduled for release on Eidul Azha this year.

Mehwish Hayat has previously starred in blockbuster Pakistani films, including “Punjab Nahi Jaungi”, “Actor in Law” and “London Nahi Jaunga”.

The Lahore District Court on Tuesday adjourned proceedings in a case against YouTuber Saad-ur-Rehman, also known as Ducky Bhai, and other accused over the alleged illegal promotion of gambling apps after investigators sought more time to submit a forensic report.

Judicial Magistrate Naeem Wattoo heard the case in Lahore District Court, where the investigating officer requested additional time to file the forensic report. The court granted the request and adjourned the hearing.

Saad-ur-Rehman and the other accused appeared before the court and marked their attendance.

The court had previously indicted the accused in the case.

The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has registered a case against influencer Aroob Jatoi and others for allegedly promoting gambling applications illegally.

In a separate hearing in Lahore Sessions Court, Additional Sessions Judge Zulfiqar Ahmed Naeem heard a petition seeking interim bail for Aroob Jatoi, the wife of Saad-ur-Rehman, in connection with the same allegations.

During the hearing, the investigating officer told the court that a forensic report comprising around 2,000 pages had been received, but its printing process was still pending.

The report would be submitted to the court within the next two days, the officer said.

The NCCIA requested more time to submit the report, after which the court extended Jatoi’s interim bail until June 4.

Cannes 2026 opens with French comedy The Electric Kiss

Pierre Salvadori says he was happy but unable to celebrate after learning his unfinished comedy The Electric Kiss had been chosen to open the 79th Cannes Film Festival, forcing him to keep working right up to the deadline.

The film, a 1920s Paris-set comedy about a fake psychic who cons a widower before falling in love with him, was selected despite still being in post-production.

Salvadori said he never expected it to enter competition and had quietly hoped it would be chosen to open the festival instead.

Festival rules require the opening film to premiere in cinemas across France on the same day as the ceremony.

Festival director Thierry Frémaux said the rule, introduced around 15 years ago, is meant to strengthen commercial impact and reinforce the idea that cinema should be experienced in theatres.

Salvadori said he looks forward to the audience reaction, calling it a key part of his motivation as a filmmaker.

The selection process began in December, with organisers reviewing films based on audience appeal, critical potential, direction, and cast strength.

Frémaux said the opening film is not necessarily part of the main competition and is chosen to make an immediate impact.

In recent years, opening films have increasingly been directed by French filmmakers.

While past editions featured Hollywood titles such as Moulin Rouge! and The Da Vinci Code, international studio films have become less common.

Experts say the opening slot provides strong visibility for any film, describing it as one of the most powerful promotional platforms in global cinema.

Eurovision kicks off in Vienna amid Israel boycott row and tight security

The Eurovision Song Contest begins in Vienna on Tuesday, with divisions over Israel’s participation overshadowing the 70th edition of the annual pop music competition.

The host city has been decorated with hearts and the contest’s “United by Music” slogan as performers from 35 countries prepare to compete for the title.

However, Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Iceland are boycotting the event in protest against Israel’s inclusion.

Several pro-Palestinian demonstrations are expected during Eurovision week, while security has been stepped up across Vienna.

Police officers from across Austria have been deployed, with additional support from Germany.

Authorities have also highlighted ongoing security concerns following a 2024 terror plot linked to an attack plan at a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna.

Austria’s intelligence chief has warned that threats from Islamist groups and Iran-linked networks remain high.

Israeli singer Noam Bettan is among the 15 acts competing in Tuesday’s semifinal at the Wiener Stadthalle.

The top 10 will advance to Saturday’s final, joining qualifiers from Thursday’s second semifinal.

The United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy automatically qualify as major financial contributors, while host nation Austria also goes straight to the final.

Bettan is performing the ballad “Michelle” and is aiming to secure Israel a place in the final after the country finished second in 2025. Finland is among the bookmakers’ favourites this year with “Liekinheitin” (“Flamethrower”).

Other semifinal acts include Greece’s Akylas with “Ferto” (“Bring It”), Portugal’s Bandidos do Cante with “Rosa,” and San Marino’s Senhit with “Superstar,” featuring Boy George.

Eurovision has long mixed music with politics. Russia was expelled in 2022 following its invasion of Ukraine.

More recently, the 2024 and 2025 editions saw protests over Israel’s participation and its conduct in Gaza, as well as allegations of voting irregularities.

In response, organisers have tightened voting rules and reduced the number of votes per viewer in an effort to prevent coordinated manipulation.

Despite tensions, Eurovision historians say the contest continues to survive political crises while maintaining its core identity as a pan-European cultural event.

A television series based on the blockbuster “Fast & Furious” movie franchise is being developed for the Peacock ‌streaming service, NBCUniversal said on Monday.

Vin Diesel, who plays Dominic Toretto in the films, announced that the series was coming to the small screen at a presentation to advertisers at Radio City Music Hall.

At the event, Diesel said four TV shows were in the works. An NBCUniversal press release distributed later in the day listed only one “Fast & Furious” show in development.

The actor said he was initially hesitant to commit to sequels for “Fast & Furious,” fearing that continuing the story about a group of street racers might prevent the original film from ever being considered a classic.

That concern has since been put to rest: this Wednesday, the Cannes Film Festival will mark the high‑speed franchise’s 25th anniversary with a midnight screening, honouring it as a classic.

Diesel will attend the Cannes screening alongside several of his co-stars from the films.

Since the first “Fast & Furious” movie in 2001, the 11 films in the series have ‌brought in more than $7 billion at global box offices.

The celebration of the franchise extends well beyond the screen.

A new “Fast & Furious” roller coaster is set to open at Universal Studios Hollywood this summer, with another attraction planned for Universal’s Orlando theme parks.

“For the last decade, we realised the fans want more,” Diesel said, noting that longtime viewers are eager to see the continuation of the franchise’s legacy characters and storylines.

Diesel praised Donna Langley, chairman of NBCUniversal Entertainment & Studios and chief content officer, who oversees film and television programming.

“I had to wait until it was right,” he said. “It became right when Donna Langley started to oversee it all.

That’s when I knew the integrity of the characters, the international appeal, and what makes us all feel like family would be protected in the TV space,” the 58‑year‑old actor said.

The final “Fast & Furious” film is scheduled to debut on March 17, 2028.

The cast also includes Hamza Ali Abbasi, Humaima Malick, Gohar Rasheed, Faris Shafi and Ali Azmat.

The film emerged as one of the highest-grossing Pakistani movies ever, earning more than $13 million worldwide and crossing Rs1 billion at the domestic box office. It was widely credited with reviving large-scale Pakistani cinema and expanding the global reach of Punjabi-language films.

China remains one of the world’s largest film markets but maintains strict limits on foreign film imports, with Hollywood studios having long campaigned for broader access.

While Pakistani films have previously screened in China, Lashari said “The Legend of Maula Jatt” was the first Pakistani movie to secure a place within the country’s exclusive foreign film quota system.

Earlier, “Parwaaz Hai Junoon” became the first Pakistani film in decades to receive a theatrical release in China when it premiered there in November 2020.

The film was also expected to release in India in 2024, which would have made it the first Pakistani movie to screen in Indian cinemas in more than a decade after Shoaib Mansoor’s “Bol”. However, the release did not materialise following opposition from hardline nationalist groups.

Netflix hints at new chapter in Money Heist universe

Netflix has reignited excitement around the popular Spanish crime franchise Money Heist after teasing that the story is far from over, despite the original series ending years ago.

A new teaser released by Netflix has sparked fresh speculation among fans about a possible continuation of the franchise.

While no official Money Heist Season 6 has been announced, the teaser revisits scenes from the Royal Mint and Bank of Spain robberies, alongside references to “gold” and “priceless treasures.”

The teaser includes the lines: “The revolution isn’t over” and “The next step has already begun,” fuelling theories about future projects connected to the franchise.

The series, known for its red jumpsuits, Salvador Dalí masks and the song Bella Ciao, became one of Netflix’s biggest international hits and developed a global fan following.

Meanwhile, the franchise’s spin-off Berlin is set to return with its second season titled Berlin and the Lady with an Ermine on May 15, 2026.

Pedro Alonso will reprise his role as Berlin, with the story focusing on the character’s earlier years and a new heist set in Seville.

Reports also suggest Netflix may expand the franchise further through new international spin-offs and possible projects involving characters such as Colonel Tamayo and the Professor, played by Álvaro Morte.

The franchise previously expanded globally with Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area, adapting the original concept for a Korean setting.

Dua Lipa sues Samsung for $15 million for allegedly using her image to sell TVs

British pop star Dua Lipa has filed a lawsuit against ‌Samsung Electronics seeking at least $15 million in damages, accusing the South Korean tech giant of using her image without permission to market its television sets.

The lawsuit alleges that Samsung featured a copyrighted image of the pop star on the front of cardboard boxes containing televisions for retail sale, enabling the company to benefit from what seemed like her endorsement of the product.

The image alleged to have been used on the TV boxes is titled “Dua Lipa - Backstage at Austin City Limits, 2024,“ and Lipa is the owner of all rights, title and interest in the image, the lawsuit said.

The suit was filed on Friday in the California federal court.

A spokesperson for Samsung Electronics declined to comment, saying it was unable to comment on pending litigation, while Dua Lipa’s lawyers did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the case.

Besides copyright and ‌trademark infringement, Dua Lipa has accused Samsung Electronics of breaching publicity rights.

Lipa’s lawyers have attached screenshots of social media postings and comments in the filing claiming that the pop star’s image on the front of the boxes pushed potential customers to purchase the product.

One of these screenshots shows a fan commenting that they would get the TV “just because Dua is on it.”

The “Levitating” singer became aware of Samsung’s alleged infringement in June last year and demanded that Samsung stop using her image, but the electronics manufacturer repeatedly refused to do so, her lawyers said.

Samsung’s alleged unauthorised use of Dua Lipa’s image has “caused and continues to cause dilution” of the pop star’s “brand identity and commercial goodwill by falsely conveying to the consuming public that she approves of and endorses” the products in question, they added.

Films that redefined cinema and became modern classics

Some films go beyond box office success and become defining moments in cinema through storytelling, performances, direction and cultural impact.

Over the years, several movies across genres have earned lasting recognition for changing filmmaking standards and audience expectations.

Among the most celebrated is The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, directed by Peter Jackson, which won 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and became one of the most influential fantasy films ever made.

Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction gained acclaim for its non-linear storytelling and memorable dialogue, while Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas and Raging Bull became landmark crime and sports dramas, respectively.

Why Lahore still captivates visitors with food, history and culture

“One who hasn’t seen Lahore is not yet born”, goes a local saying that captures the enduring pull of Pakistan’s cultural capital — a city where centuries of history and shifting empires meet a restless modern energy.

Known as the city of lively hearts, the city of gardens and the heart of Pakistan, Lahore rarely slows down.

From the old quarters of the Walled City to its newer middle-class and affluent neighbourhoods, it is also a place where the past is never far from the present.

I have a deep personal connection to Lahore. I was born and raised in the city, where my family’s roots date back 500 years.

Over two decades reporting for Reuters, I have watched it expand and change through development projects, political and social movements, festivals and the steady replacement of older traditions with newer trends.

Here are my tips on how to experience the city like a Lahori:

The way around:

Lahore offers plenty of ways to move around, but those keen to travel like a local should make use of its extensive network of buses and trains.

For a more relaxed circuit, there is also a double-decker sightseeing bus that starts and ends at Gaddafi Stadium, Pakistan’s largest cricket ground, passing by several historical landmarks.

Ride-hailing apps such as inDrive, Uber and Careem are also available.

More adventurous visitors can flag down a three-wheeled auto-rickshaw, but I would suggest avoiding the motorcycle rickshaws, which can be as uncomfortable as they are chaotic.

Bites to eat:

Lahori cuisine is bold, rich and unapologetically spicy, and breakfast is one of the city’s great rituals. Morning staples include siri-paya, a slow-cooked stew of goat head and trotters; halwa puri, a dish made of fried bread, semolina pudding, chickpea curry and pickle; chikkar cholay, a chickpea curry served with sesame-studded kulcha, a clay oven-baked loaf; harisa, a slow-cooked porridge-like dish made from meat, rice, lentils and wheat; nihari, a slow-cooked meat stew; and a glass of lassi — a blended yoghurt drink — to wash it down.

For a proper Lahori breakfast, I would head to the Gawalmandi, Old Anarkali, Temple Road or Lohari Gate neighbourhoods, where most of these dishes can be found for 300 to 1,200 Pakistani rupees (about $1 to $3) per person. My favourites are Amratsari Harisa in Gawalmandi and Phajja Siri Paye in Tibbi City.

By evening, the city turns more carnivorous. Gawalmandi, Old Anarkali, Temple Road, Lakshmi Chowk and Tibbi City are known for kebabs, chicken tikka, tava chicken, Lahore fish and takatak — a dish of chopped offal cooked on a flat griddle to the sharp rhythm of metal spatulas.

Standouts include Cooco’s Den opposite the Grand Mosque in Tibbi City and Butt Karahi at Lakshami Chowk. To soften the blow of the spices, try kheer or falooda — an indulgent rice pudding and milk mixed with rose syrup and vermicelli, respectively — for dessert.

For something more upscale, a cluster of restaurants near the Lahore Fort serves traditional dishes with modern touches, often with views of the fort, Badshahi Mosque and Minar-e-Pakistan.

Pro-tip: Carry cash — many of the best places still proudly do business the old-fashioned way.

Historical bonanza:

Lahore shows off its centuries of history. The Lahore Fort — a vast complex of palaces, halls and gardens — was once the seat of Mughal power and remains the city’s grandest monument. Plan to spend several hours exploring it.

Opposite stands the Badshahi Mosque, a red-sandstone giant that ranks among the world’s largest.

From here, take a rickshaw to Wazir Khan Mosque, famed for its 17th-century Mughal craftsmanship, and the beautiful Samadhi of Ranjit Singh, the resting place of the Sikh ruler of Punjab.

Elsewhere, the Shalamar Gardens showcase impressive water features and bountiful garden pavilions, while the Lahore Museum holds artefacts that trace the region’s layered past.

The city’s British colonial inheritance is visible in landmarks such as the Lahore High Court, Punjab University’s Old Campus, the General Post Office, Tollinton Market, and the Punjab Governor’s House.

For those willing to venture further afield, the tombs of the Mughal emperor Jahangir and his wife Noor Jahan in Shahdara, on the other side of the Ravi River, offer another window into the city’s imperial past.

At the Wagah border, the daily flag-lowering ceremony between Pakistan and India delivers a theatrical display of nationalism and rivalry.

It’s a city where centuries of history and shifting empires meet a restless modern energy.

For a different side of Lahore, visit its Sufi shrines — including those of Data Ganj Bakhsh, Shah Jamal, and Miran Mauj Darya — which speak to the city’s spiritual traditions and history shaped as much by coexistence and devotion as by kings and conquest.

Culture and arts:

Lahore is widely seen as Pakistan’s cultural heart, where language, tradition and the arts remain deeply woven into daily life.

That is most visible in the Walled City, with its narrow lanes, crowded bazaars and long-held customs.

Pak Tea House is a long-running favourite of Lahore’s literary circles, while institutions such as the National College of Arts have shaped generations of artists, and venues like the Alhamra Arts Council host theatre, music and exhibitions.

Lahore is home to several major classical music gharanas, or schools, and has produced or hosted some of the subcontinent’s most celebrated singing voices, among them Noor Jehan, Mehdi Hassan and Ghulam Ali.

Its film and television industry, Lollywood, has also left a lasting mark on popular culture.

To take in a show, visit Cue Cinema at Main Boulevard, Gulberg, which boasts multiple screens and movies with subtitles.

Where to shop:

Lahore caters to every budget. For a traditional shopping experience, Anarkali Bazaar and Ichhra Bazaar remain the best places to browse for clothes, accessories and local goods at modest prices — along with the bustle, bargaining and variety that define shopping in the city.

For something more polished without going fully upscale, Liberty Market in Gulberg strikes a balance between local retailers and brand-name stores, while Fortress Square draws those who prefer indoor shopping and a more comfortable pace.

CITY MEMO DATA POINTS

Population: 13 million

Price of a chai: PKR 80 to 100 (about $0.30) at a roadside dhaba.

Price of a lassi: PKR 150-300 ($0.50 to $1) from Jaida Lassi in the Gawalmandi neighbourhood.

Great place to see a sunset: Lahore Fort on the Badshahi Mosque side around golden hour, then stay into dusk. You’ll get the strongest mix of architecture, atmosphere, and evening lighting. Don’t miss Lawrence Garden (Bagh e Jinnah) for a morning walk or evening jogging.

Largest university: University of Punjab, 51,000 students.

Renowned actor Dananeer Mobeen has said she would never compromise her dreams and career for love, stressing that work and personal goals remain her top priorities.

Speaking in a recent interview, the actor shared her views on relationships, marriage and the growing “shipping culture” on social media.

Dananeer said she was focused on living her own life and would welcome someone into it only if the relationship was genuine and healthy.

“I will never compromise my dreams and career for love,” she said, adding that she did not believe in chasing people or forcing relationships.

The actor said emotional suffering over one-sided relationships was not something she believed in, as she preferred to stay focused on her work and ambitions.

Dananeer also expressed concern over fans linking actors’ names together online and assuming romantic relationships between co-stars.

She said such speculation often created confusion and mental stress not only for actors but also for their families.

According to the actor, fans sometimes become deeply attached to on-screen characters and struggle to separate fiction from real life.

Dananeer is currently promoting her upcoming film “Mera Lyari”, which revolves around football and other sports in Karachi’s Lyari area.

The film has been written and directed by Abu Aleeha. Dananeer previously appeared in popular drama serials including “Sinf-e-Aahan” and “Mohabbat Gumshuda Meri”.

Paramount settles lawsuit over rights to 'Scream' mask

Paramount Skydance and film producer Spyglass Media Group have settled a dispute with Hollywood makeup and special-effects studio Alterian over the rights to the “Ghostface” mask from Paramount and Spyglass’ “Scream” horror movie series, according to a filing ‌in California federal court.

The parties in Los Angeles on Wednesday announced that they have resolved their dispute and will dismiss their lawsuits against each other.

Spokespeople for the companies did not immediately respond to requests for comment and more information about the settlement on Thursday.

Alterian was founded by makeup and effects designer Tony Gardner.

His studio has worked on films including “Zombieland,” “Jackass” and “Hairspray”, and helped create the iconic helmets for electronic music duo Daft Punk.

Gardner said he created the Ghostface mask in 1991. Paramount and Spyglass sued Alterian in February, alleging it had tried to “strong-arm” them into paying millions of dollars to avoid a copyright lawsuit weeks before “Scream 7” was released later that month.

The movie companies argued that they properly licensed the mask from costume maker Fun World, which also claims to have created it in 1991, and that Alterian had forfeited its right to sue by ‌raising its claims too late.

The first “Scream” movie was released in 1996.

Alterian countersued Paramount, Spyglass and Fun World for copyright infringement the day the movie companies filed their lawsuit.

“Despite stringing along Alterian for more than a year with enticements of brokering a mutually acceptable resolution, Defendants — goliaths in the industry — shamelessly continue to rip off and profit from Alterian’s creative work with impunity,” Alterian said in its complaint.

Fun World did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the settlement on Thursday.

The cases are Spyglass Media Group LLC v. Alterian Inc, US District Court for the Central District of California, No. 2:26-cv-01235 and Alterian Inc v. Fun World, US District Court for the Central District of California, No. 2:26-cv-01260.
